After I have relocated here at Kolkata, decided to visit Alipore Zoo once. This was my 2nd visit of the same zoo. I did visit this zoo long back with my parents when I was a kid of 4th standard, recalling those memories I would say it wasn’t a good experience due to the weather as it was summer that time. So this time I decided to visit during winter season to avoid Kolkata’s terrible heat.
Alipore Zoo is India’s oldest zoological park opened as a zoo since 1876 and covers 18.811 ha. It is known as the home of the Aldabra Giant Tortoise, Adwaita, who passed away in 2006 and was reputed to have been over 250 years old. Luckily, I met him on my 1st visit. It displays a large number of mega fauna including Royal Bengal tiger, Jaguar, Hippopotamus, Great Indian one-horned rhinoceros, Zebra, Indian Elephant, etc.
In compare to my last visit, I felt there were more variety earlier as I could not find giraffe and some other species. As I visited during winter, the weather was manageable but it was over crowded. Surprisingly, some of the visitors forced us to take photos with them and also making videos of us. It was disturbing a bit and kind of spoiled our day, but other than that the zoo is really well maintain and worth visiting.
It is a big attraction for tourists and I think it can be very interesting for kids too. But my suggestions would be to visit on weekdays to avoid the crowd and always be careful with the existing crowds in time of your visit.
